A safety closure continues on Highway 50 between Montrose and Gunnison due to the findings of an ongoing safety inspection that identified cracks in the Middle bridge near the Dillon Pinnacles. The closure is in place between US 50 Mile Point 131 (intersection with Colorado Highway 92) and MP 138. Although there is currently no estimated time for reopening, Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) representatives state all resources are being deployed at the bridge. As more of the inspection work is complete, CDOT will share more details about the condition of the bridges, as well as any restrictions that will need to remain in place while repairs are made.

This closure creates a significant detour for commuters between Montrose and Gunnison, including Hinsdale County and the Town of Lake City. The recommended detour route for through traffic is via I-70 to the north or US 160 to the south. CR26 (Lake City cutoff) is currently available as a limited access route to Hwy 50 for local residents only of Hinsdale, Gunnison and Montrose counties. This route should be used for necessary and critical travel only.

AS OF FRIDAY, MAY 5, THERE WILL BE FOUR TIMES DAILY TO TRAVEL ACROSS CR 26

The new piloted release times for westbound travel from CO 149 and CR 26 are:

Detour Restrictions

--Prohibited vehicles will need to use Interstate 70 (I-70) or Colorado Highway 160 (US 160) to travel between Gunnison and Montrose.
--No other public travel will be allowed outside of these times.

--Checking for updates daily is advised in the event detour access is adjusted due to necessary roadwork from changes in road condition.
--Critical local public travel refers to travel reasons related to medical visits, commuting for work , and for residents who live on either side of the road closure.
--To maintain this route and continue road improvements, crews will work on CR 26 road repairs between release times so no other public travel will be allowed before and after those two timeframes.

CR25 (BLUE MESA CUTOFF) IS PERMANENTLY CLOSED AT THIS TIME DUE TO NON-AUTHORIZED PLOWING AND DRIVING THAT HAS CAUSED ROAD DAMAGE. THE ROAD WILL NOT BE OPEN UNTIL REPAIRS ARE COMPLETE.
